How we calculate engagement rate
We take a creator’s latest 10 reels after skipping pinned ones, then average their likes and comments.
ER by followers = (avg likes + avg comments) ÷ followers × 100
We also show ER by views, (avg likes + avg comments) ÷ avg views × 100, labelled separately, because it shows how well a creator turns viewers into reactions.
What is a good engagement rate on Instagram in India?
Our working benchmarks, for guidance only:
| Creator tier | Followers | Good ER |
|---|---|---|
| Nano | 1K–10K | 3–8% |
| Micro | 10K–100K | 2.5–6% |
| Macro | 100K–500K | 1.5–4% |
| Mega | 500K+ | 1–3% |
Niche matters too: food and recipe creators earn saves and comments, beauty creators drive questions about products, and parenting creators often get high trust and conversation.
Why we skip pinned reels.
Pinned reels are usually a creator’s best or paid posts. Counting them makes the average look better than everyday performance, which is what a brand actually buys.
Why 10 reels.
Ten recent reels are enough to smooth out one viral video, and recent enough to reflect how the account performs today.
Red flags beyond ER.
Sudden follower jumps, bot followers, repetitive comments, engagement pods, and a big follower count with consistently low views.
Common mistakes.
Counting likes but not comments, including pinned reels, judging by one viral reel, and comparing nano creators with macro creators.
How creators can improve ER.
Post consistently, hook viewers in the first seconds, ask real questions in captions, and reply to comments.
Questions, answered.
What is a good engagement rate on Instagram in India?
Generally 2–5%, higher for smaller creators and lower for very large accounts.
How do you calculate Instagram engagement rate?
(Average likes + average comments) ÷ followers × 100, using the latest 10 reels after skipping pinned ones.
Is follower count or ER more important?
Neither alone. Followers show reach; ER and average views show whether people actually watch and react.
Why is ER by views different?
It compares reactions to viewers, not followers, so it often reads higher for creators whose reels travel beyond their followers.
How often should brands re-check ER?
Before every campaign, and every 30 days for long-term creators.
